CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Super High School Level Imposter [No Known Real Name]
AGE: Somewhere in his early 20s as of his last appearance in canon
CANON: Dangan Ronpa

CANON HISTORY: DR Wiki
CANON PERSONALITY:

The Imposter's personality is a somewhat complicated subject, due to the nature of his existence. He spends a significant portion of his time in canon pretending to be other people, and yet there are a number of scenes where he speaks as his 'true' self. Additionally, there are some differences between his portrayal of Byakuya Togami and the real deal, which seem to shed some light on his true personality.

At his core, the Imposter is someone who feels like he has no true identity, and that he can only exist when taking on another's appearance. He strives for acceptance and friendship in order to avoid loneliness. but he feels that he can only accomplish this through deception. If one of his disguises were to be revealed, he would then disappear and find a new alias. He also alludes to trust issues that have built up over the years due to the nature of his existence, as he tries to keep his true self a secret, which leads to a cycle of distrusting others and being distrusted in turn. Despite that, he does tend to value the bonds that forms with others. In the Despair Arc, when he reveals the truth about himself to Tsumiki, he expresses that he will not demand or threaten her silence on the matter, and he instead assures her that he trusts his classmates. This is reflected in the Imposter later revealing his identity to the rest of his class.

The Imposter is also shown to care deeply about others and to take efforts to look after them. When disguised as Mitarai, he fusses over the health of the real Mitarai and tries to insist that he eat more. He even ends up revealing his identity to one of his classmates so that she could help the real Mitarai when his health was taking a turn for the worst. During the Neo World Project, this side of his was even reflected through his Byakuya Togami disguise, as he insisted on being the leader partly to keep an eye on everyone else. He was determined to prevent any killings from occurring and attempted to keep the class's morale up. The Imposter took this responsibility completely onto himself, and he ultimately went as far as sacrificing himself to save one of his classmates.

There is one other aspect of the Imposter that shows itself even when he is in disguise, and that is his passionate love for food. He especially seems to love meat, fast food and other unhealthy foods, and he will consume such foods in vast amounts. This leads to one big difference that his potrayal of Mitarai, as the real Mitarai is shown to skip meals and neglect his health in favor of working on his anime, while the Imposter continues to eat food while dressed as Mitarai. Even as Togami, he constantly finds ways to bring food into conversation, and this is underlined by a difference between two different free time events. In the first game, Byakuya Togami mentions the proverb, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" during one of his free-time events. In the second game, the Imposter disguised as Togami mentions a proverb during a free time event as well, but it is a more nonsensical one about the tastiness of chicken and beef. The Imposter implies that he loves food because it remains a constant in his life while everything else is changing, and he mentions once during the anime that above all one should believe in 'fats and sugars'. The Imposter seems to take some pride in his weight, and even when people insult him while he's disguised as Togami, he brushes those attempted insults off and instead commends them on their merits. He even takes an odd sense of pride in being nicknamed "Ham Hands".

Between the two main disguises that the Imposter has taken on throughout the series, we have seen him take on very different personalities. As Mitarai, he is relatively soft-spoken, nervous and quick to panic when things go wrong. He tends to keep to himself and is skeptical about the nature of groups, due to the promise of individual success that Hope's Peak brings. Oddly enough, even though the Imposter took Mitarai's place in order to attend classes, he was initially shown to be skipping classes until Yukizome literally dragged him to class. However, it is most likely that he acted this way in order to be faithful about his portrayal of Mitarai, who himself had been trying to avoid class.

As Togami, he managed to emulate the SHSL Heir in some ways. He acted arrogant, narcissistic and domineering. He referred to himself as being on another level as others due to his Togami status and was quick to belittle others. He also bore survival instincts that sometimes tended on paranoia, which was reflected in all of the measures that the Imposter took in confiscating weapons and frisking his classmates in an attempt to prevent a murder at a party.

However, the Imposter's portrayal ended up being significantly different from the real deal, even beyond the food-related issues that were previously mentioned. This is shown in comparing how they approached the idea of a killing game. In the first game, the original Togami was excited by the idea of a killing game and took on an individualist/survivalist approach, shunning the idea of working together with the group until near the end of the game and going as far as tampering with this classmate's dead body to make a murder trial more fun. In stark contrast, the Imposter's version of Togami is cautious about the idea of a killing game and is quick to try to unite everyone as a group with himself as the leader. He takes onto himself the responsibility of protecting the entire class and preventing even one murder from happening. The Imposter's Togami is also generally less angry and relatively easygoing than the real deal. Even though he can be forceful in commanding others, he doesn't go as far in insulting them and even tries to reach out to them, such as when he tries to talk Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu down from bragging about his capability of committing murder. These flaws in the Imposter's impersonation may seem to be a mistake, although in one of his free time events, he does imply that he is aware of the difference on some level. He asks Hajime if he would still like him if he was "more handsome and more disagreeable", which seems to be referring to the 'real' Togami.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

As the title implies, the SHSL Imposter has a talent for acting as an imposter. He is a master of disguise, who works hard to imitate the appearance, personality and voice of whoever he has chosen to impersonate. This is reflected in the voice actor changes for the Imposter, as he is always voiced by the voice actor of the character he is impersonating at the time. The Imposter does have a notably heavier build than the people he tries to impersonate, but according to a statement from Monokuma, the Imposter is skilled enough that this does not affect his ability to fool others. Some within canon do notice the difference in weight when they see the 'real' person, including Chisa Yukizome, but they do not immediately connect this discrepancy with the possibility of the Imposter being an entirely different person than the real person. However, one other apparent flaw in his disguises is that he seems to put his own spin on another's personality sometimes, as shown in the above personality section with the differences in his portrayal of Byakuya Togami.

Additionally, despite his weight, the Imposter is capable of moving quite quickly, and he seems to have picked up some other skills to help with his impersonations. Notably, he is shown wielding a sword during his brief impersonation of Kyosuke Munakata. He also seems to be able to change between costumes quickly, as displayed within the DR3 Hope Episode, when he switches from his Munakata disguise to his Mitarai disguise within the span of a few scenes, and then he ends up back in his Togami disguise afterwards.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Byakuya Kirigiri
AU AGE: 20
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: He will resemble his Togami disguise for the sake of having more icons to work with. But there will be some minor changes here and there so that he doesn't look exactly like he's dressed up as Togami. His hair style is different, and his facial features are a bit different as well. But he'll still wear glasses and have Togami's eyes and hair color.

AU HISTORY:

- Byakuya's father (brother of Kyouko's father) was originally born in Japan and eventually immigrated to America. He settled down near Recolle and had a son with a French woman. This son was named Byakuya Kirigiri.

- Byakuya was always a bright child and a critical thinker. He's been a regular honor student and ultimately has been attending Recolle U on a scholarship. Specially, he's a business major who will be starting his junior year.

- When he was a child, he was teased by other kids because of his weight and his love of fast food. His initials were "BK", so they teased him by calling him the Burger King. Though they got to him at first, Byakuya ultimately managed to 'own' the insult and declared that he truly would become the king of burgers.

- He's always had an odd, passionate attachment to fast food. His dream, which he realized as he made his way through the above bullying, is to open his own perfect fast food chain, and to that end he has been working within fast food restaurants to try to master the ins and outs of the business. Currently, he's working as a shift leader at Mcdonalds.

- He has one cousin on his father's side, Kyouko Kirigiri. They've only gotten to know each other in the past few years when she moved to Recolle. He encourages her to eat more, and they semi-regularly exchange brain teasers and other intellectual challenges.

- Byakuya has a few hobbies. He's always had a deep interest in anime and attends Recolle U's anime club regularly. He speaks like a conoisseur of anime, often crossing over into being pretentious. He also loves indulging in all sorts of intellectual challenges/strategy games/brain teasers. And he is also good at doing impersonations of others, though he doesn't do it often. Mostly he does it when joking around with family, and he also opens voice commissions sometimes to make extra money on the side. But in general, he believes that impersonations are too silly for the serious image that he tries to convey.

- He doesn't have much in the way of friends, though he does form attachments to those who fall under his command (ie his McDonalds employees) and to people whom he thinks needs help with their eating habits. One example of the latter is Makoto Naegi; Byakuya worked with him on a project once and was insulted by the sad state of his refrigerator, so he does what he can to ensure that Makoto is well-fed.

(Permission regarding Kyouko and Makoto were granted by Lucy and Ichi, respectively!)

AU PERSONALITY:

One key factor that lies at the route of Byakuya Kirigiri's personality differences is that he has his own existence and has not had to live the life of an imposter. He takes pride in himself, often to an overconfident degree. For the most part, this AU'd version's behavior is similar to the Imposter's portrayal of Byakuya Togami. Byakuya Kirigiri can be arrogant, narcissistic and pretentious, and he can still easily be very condescending towards others, although in this case it is because of his intellect rather than being because of his perceived status. He places a lot of value in his intellect and relishes chances to test it.

He can also still be cold and slow to trust others, partly because of the arrogance that comes from his intellect and partly because he remembers from his childhood how easily apparent friends can become bullies. He does still place value in those who fall under his leadership, as he takes his responsibility as a leader very seriously and sees those under him as a reflection of his leadership skills. He's also relatively more relaxed with his family. His nicer side has a better chance of showing up with them, and he jokes more around them. But outside of that, he tends to treat things as Serious Business, and his insulting remarks are the closest things to jokes that he produces.

Byakuya Kirigiri doesn't have many traces of Mitarai's personality in him, but he does have a love of anime at least. (His favorite characters have always been the megane ones, of course, and he may have picked up some mannerisms from them). As he watches anime, he takes it apart in a very analytical manner that can often cross over into pretentiousness.
